James Sherman practices environmental law and renewable energy law.

He has practiced environmental law for fifteen years, starting as Assistant Counsel of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection where he advised the Commissioners, General Counsel, and senior staff of the operating units on compliance with the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. He started in private practice in 1998 and has worked in virtually all major areas of environmental law including Superfund sites, defense of governmental administrative, civil, and criminal enforcement actions, and representing policyholders against insurance companies for environmental insurance coverage. He is also actively involved in the prosecution and defense of private cost recovery actions, the investigation and remediation of contaminated property, and the environmental due diligence investigation of corporate, commercial, and real estate transactions.

James is also involved with renewable energy projects. He was part of a team that delivered a hydrogen fueling station and multiple hydrogen-powered vehicles now in operation at the airport in Albany, New York under a $1.2MM NYSERDA grant. More recently, he worked with the City of Newark on a $76MM grant application for 50 battery electric transit buses and fast charging stations. James has also worked on a number of solar electric power projects, including Power Purchase Agreements and the sale of Renewable Energy Certificates. Through his work in renewable energy, James has worked with some of the largest utilities and gas companies in the world as well as some of the nation’s leading clean tech companies and entrepreneurs.

James earned a B.A. cum laude in urban geography from Queens College and his law degree from Brooklyn Law School where he was Executive Articles Editor of the Brooklyn Law Review. After law school he clerked for the Hon. James E. Yacos, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of New Hampshire. Mr. Sherman was chairman of the Montclair Environmental Commission from 2004 -2008 and a trustee of the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions from 2006-2008.
